Functional and Aesthetic Décor for A Breakfast Nook

Last week, we shared some ideas for functional kitchen décor. In the larger scheme of things, all décor has a functional purpose – sometimes for a truly practical purpose, and other times for an aesthetic purpose to balance out a space. Our clients typically come to us with ideas they’ve considered over time for addressing their aesthetic and functional needs, and we love surprising them with an unexpected solution.

In our recent downtown Austin condo project, we implemented an antique screen, also known as a room divider, for both a functional AND aesthetic purpose. We discovered this screen at the back of an antique store in Houston and knew it was the perfect fit for what we needed.

Aesthetically, the screen’s dark stain added depth to the small breakfast area. It’s pocked wood surface and cane mesh lent a textural element that breaks up the smoothness and simplicity of the solid-colored furnishings and wall décor.

Functionally, our client had a maintenance closet that was a bit of an eye sore in this space. Her desire was to conceal or obstruct it in a way that was less distracting. Ideally, it would be great if it didn’t exist in such a noticeable area.

Our client had put a lot of thought into how to address her issue and came to us married to the idea of hanging a large artwork from the ceiling to cover the closet door. She imagined being able to unhook the artwork from a chain so that she could access the closest as needed. While we were happy to oblige her, we let her know of our concerns and that utilizing a screen would be a better solution. Unfortunately, our client didn’t take to the idea immediately.

We wouldn’t be sharing all of this with you if she didn’t finally come around though! And thank goodness, because she LOVED the screen when it was delivered and arranged in its rightful place. The experience really speaks to the magic that happens when we are given the grace to execute our vision and let it unfold.

This project perfectly illustrates how functionality and aesthetics can harmonize in a space. By integrating the antique screen, we not only addressed a practical issue but also enhanced the visual appeal of the room. Moments like these highlight the transformative power of creative solutions when clients trust our expertise and vision.
